All You need to know about spray tanning / airbrush tanning:
What are the different spray-tan options available? What are
the pros/cons to each method?. The different options are an automated spray
booth and a spray tan by an artist or technician. A booth is great for a salon
as it does not require a person to administer the tan, however it is not always
the best option for the client as an automated booth can miss areas and if the
client doesn't know what they are doing in the booth it can lead to lots of
streaking and application mishaps.
When an artist does the spray tan application, the client
will generally have a better resulting tan as the technician can see exactly
where they are applying to the product and where they may have missed. The
artist can also enhance areas such as the abs and calf muscles.
How can someone determine which shade is right for them?
Don't be afraid to ask for a test spray, meaning a small area on your upper leg
or your stomach to see how you like the resulting tan color! You may have to
pay for it, but it is much better than being an ugly shade of orange all over!
Try and look for products that have a more olive bronzing guide color to them
vs. just a clear solution. This will also help the product to not turn orange
or yellow.
How should women prep for an airbrush tan? Wax, shave and
exfoliate with an oil-free body scrub before getting your spray tan and do not
apply any lotion to your body as this can sometimes act as a barrier to the
solution and the color may not develop as dark as you would like. If necessary,
apply a tiny bit of lotion only to really dry areas such as the knees, elbows,
ankles right before you get sprayed to prevent those areas from grabbing too
much product and turning unnecessarily dark.
What should clients do while they're tanned to maximum
results? Try and stay out of water for long, extended periods of time and also
pat dry your skin when drying off - no excessive rubbing! Maintain your tan
with a very light moisturizer - nothing too heavy or greasy! Start exfoliating
your tan off about 4-5 days later so you have a more natural, fading tan.
How long (on average) will the tan last? Depending on your
own skin's cell turnover and the product used, a spray or airbrush tan should
last anywhere from 5 to 9 days. For a woman who wants a spray tan for a big
event, any advice as to testing it out beforehand? Start testing spray tans a
month or so prior to the event. Ask friends and look online for
recommendations. Once you find your perfect spray tan artist, I would recommend
getting the application done one to two days before the big event.
What's the biggest mistake you see women make when it comes
to spray tanning? (And how can they prevent it?) The biggest mistakes I see is
when people use automatic spray booths and come out all stripped and blotchy.
Another mistake I see is not testing a spray tan beforehand and hating the
color once the tan has developed. Remember this is just like makeup, so not all
spray tan artists or solutions are created alike!.
